As the summer session comes to an end, I decided to take the "zoo" we made off of the wall. I placed it on the floor to give the children one more day of fun with it before putting it away. I was curious to see how the children would use the wall mural when it was in a different location. While hanging on the wall, the children used cars to follow the road and talk about the animal pictures. When the paper was placed on the floor it was put to new uses. The children began by stepping on the pictures and imitating animal sounds. They began to hop, crawl, swim and slither across the paper, moving like the animals in the pictures. After noticing the crinkling sounds of the paper, it turned into a place to dance and run across. When Landon arrived, he wrapped himself up in the paper to play peek-a-boo. He got the stuffed lion that we used for our 'Lion Hunts' and wrapped it inside the paper as well, saying "cave". Tayten immediately noticed and talked about the "deep, dark cave". The fun of one of our favorite stories just keeps going!
Last week we also scribbled with crayons, built trains and animal houses with large lego blocks, drew on the chalkboard, matched shapes and compared sizes with a shape sorting puzzle and enjoyed a brief bit of playground time in the little bit of sun that shone between rainstorms. Trae took the flannel board off the wall to make a tent to crawl under. I helped add the board to the bottom of our climber to make a ramp for the balls and cars. We read the book Big or Small, Short or Tall and compared animal sizes. We also compared the height of the children and some of the toys in our classroom. Miss Anila drew pictures on the small chalkboard and asked the children to guess what she had drawn. What a great vocabulary builder and a fun way to help assess emerging language skills.
Wednesday, Aug. 7 will be the last day of the summer session. Our building will be closed Thursday and Friday this week to allow us to prepare for the upcoming school year. Mana and I are a bit sad that the children will be moving to their new classrooms next week, but so proud to see how much they have learned and grown this year. It has been our privilege to witness their development and we thank you for sharing your most precious gifts with us.
Have a great day,
Candy
